Thinset Calculator
Turn tile area and product-specific trowel coverage into whole bags of thinset, with optional cost.
What this calculator includes
Enter the tile area and the coverage printed for the selected mortar and trowel. The calculator reduces that stated coverage when the substrate is not flat, adds your waste allowance, rounds up to whole bags, and optionally estimates cost. Tile size and trowel selection stay visible because adequate mortar coverage must be verified during installation, not assumed from area alone.
How to use this thinset calculator
- 01
Measure the tile area
Add each floor or wall section and subtract openings that will not receive tile.
- 02
Match the trowel and product
Select the planned notch, then replace the example coverage with the exact mortar data sheet value.
- 03
Describe the substrate
Use the condition adjustment as a planning allowance only; flattening work should be handled before setting tile.
- 04
Round up and verify
Buy whole bags from one compatible product and periodically lift tile to verify required mortar contact.
Worked example
Example: 240 sq ft tile floor
At 65 sq ft per 50 lb bag, a minor substrate variation reduces effective coverage to 58.5 sq ft. Adding 10% waste gives 264 sq ft, so 264 / 58.5 rounds up to 5 bags.
Practical buying and overage guidance
Use the exact mortar approved for the tile, substrate, location, and environmental exposure. Keep bags dry, check lot dates, and do not combine products simply because their coverage looks similar.

Frequently asked questions
How much area does a 50 lb bag of thinset cover?
Coverage commonly varies from roughly 40 to 95 square feet depending on the product, trowel notch, tile, substrate, and technique. Enter the coverage from the exact bag or technical data sheet rather than relying on a universal number.
Does a larger trowel use more thinset?
Yes. A larger notch leaves more mortar, so each bag covers less area. Larger tile may need a larger notch, but the installer still has to verify actual contact by lifting tiles during the work.
Should I add waste to thinset?
A 10% planning allowance is common for mixing loss and coverage variation. Rough substrates, novice installation, or small batches may need more; unused mixed mortar cannot be saved.
Can thinset level an uneven floor?
Thinset is not a general floor-leveling product. Correct substrate flatness with an approved preparation system before tile, then use mortar within its stated thickness range.
Is bag coverage guaranteed?
No. Published coverage is an estimate. Actual yield changes with notch geometry, holding angle, surface texture, back-buttering, and job conditions.
