Vinyl Siding Calculator

Estimate vinyl cartons and a separate accessory inventory using installed exposure, product coverage, openings, and current prices.

What this calculator includes

Create a vinyl-specific order from wall and gable area, openings, the selected product's installed course exposure, panel length, and carton coverage. The result separates cartons from the course-and-panel layout check, rounds starter and corner runs independently, and labels J-channel as a raw-stock equivalent with an editable accessory allowance rather than a finished cut list. It goes beyond the general siding calculator without pretending to design the water-resistive barrier, flashing, fastening, expansion clearances, or wind-resistance details.

How to use this vinyl siding calculator

  1. 01

    Measure walls, gables, and openings

Enter repeated rectangular walls, add combined gable area, and subtract measured openings. Record opening perimeter separately for J-channel planning.

  2. 02

    Copy product coverage

Enter installed course exposure, panel length, and carton coverage from the exact profile and package rather than nominal dimensions.

  3. 03

    Plan accessory stock

Enter outside corners, opening perimeter, stock length, and a separate J-channel allowance. Starter and corner runs round independently; J-channel remains a raw-stock equivalent until every opening has a cut plan.

  4. 04

    Verify the elevation layout

Use the course and panels-per-course check to plan seams and transitions, then replace fastener and price assumptions with the approved system and current quote.

Worked example

Example: four 30 by 9 ft walls

Four walls provide 1,080 square feet before gables and openings. After subtracting 180 square feet and adding 10% waste, 990 square feet divided by 200 square feet per carton rounds to five cartons. A 120-foot combined opening perimeter with 10% accessory allowance becomes 132 feet of raw J-channel stock before whole-piece rounding and the required opening cut list.

Practical buying and overage guidance

Confirm one compatible product line and color lot, installed carton coverage, starter and accessory profiles, opening and corner details, water-resistive barrier, flashing, furring, fastener schedule, expansion clearance, utility mounts, transitions, delivery, and attic or wall ventilation interfaces. Build an elevation cut plan before relying on offcuts.

Frequently asked questions

How many square feet are in a carton of vinyl siding?

Coverage varies by profile and package. Enter the installed coverage printed for the exact carton; do not assume every carton covers the same area.

Why calculate courses as well as square footage?

Area sizes cartons, while course exposure and panel length reveal horizontal rows and approximate seams. The layout check can expose short courses or joint concerns that area alone hides.

Should windows and doors be subtracted?

Measure larger openings consistently, but retain enough waste for cuts around them. Small openings may not reduce purchase quantity because surrounding panels and offcuts still control the layout.

Does the calculator include inside corners and specialty trim?

No. It includes starter, entered opening J-channel, outside corner posts, and a fastener allowance. Inside corners, utility trim, undersill, lineals, mounts, soffit, fascia, flashing, and transitions must be added from the elevation details.

Is the J-channel result a final order quantity?

No. It converts combined opening perimeter plus the editable accessory allowance into a raw stock equivalent. Separate windows and doors create cut extensions, tabs, intersections, and offcuts, so build an opening-by-opening cut list before ordering.

Can the fastener count be used as a fastening schedule?

No. It is an editable package allowance only. Product instructions, substrate, framing, wind design, corrosion exposure, and adopted requirements control fastener type and spacing.
