Sod Calculator
Enter lawn area and piece size to get pallets, pieces, cost, topsoil, and starter fertilizer.
What this calculator includes
Sod is sold by the piece and delivered by the pallet, and pallet coverage varies from farm to farm. Enter your lawn area or its dimensions, pick the piece size your farm cuts, and this calculator adds a waste allowance for curves and trimming, converts the order into whole pieces and whole pallets, prices it, and optionally adds a leveling layer of topsoil and starter fertilizer. It also flags the weight — a single pallet can weigh 1,500 to 3,000 pounds — so you plan delivery instead of a pickup-truck surprise.
How to use this sod calculator
- 01
Measure the lawn
Enter the total square footage, or a length and width for a simple rectangle. Split irregular lawns into rectangles and add the areas together.
- 02
Match the farm's cut
Choose the piece size your sod farm cuts and enter its pallet coverage — farms commonly load 400 to 500 sq ft per pallet, so confirm before ordering.
- 03
Add waste for curves
Five percent covers straight borders and trimming; use ten percent or more for curved beds, slopes, and lawns with many obstacles.
- 04
Prep, deliver, and lay same-day
Grade and lightly firm the soil (optionally with a fresh topsoil layer), schedule delivery for the day you install, lay within 24 hours, stagger the joints like brickwork, roll, and water immediately.

Frequently asked questions
How many square feet does a pallet of sod cover?
Most farms load 400 to 500 sq ft per pallet, with 450 sq ft a common figure. Coverage is set by the farm, not a standard, so this calculator keeps it editable — confirm with your supplier before ordering.
How many pieces of sod are on a pallet?
A 450 sq ft pallet holds about 168 of the common 16 × 24 in pieces (2.67 sq ft each) or about 56 of the 2 × 4 ft slabs. Big rolls are usually delivered individually rather than palletized.
How much does a pallet of sod weigh?
Roughly 1,500 to 3,000 pounds depending on soil moisture and cut thickness. That exceeds most half-ton pickup payloads, so plan on farm delivery or a proper trailer for even one pallet.
How quickly does sod need to be installed?
Lay sod within 24 hours of delivery — sooner in hot weather. Rolled sod heats up and dries out on the pallet, so schedule delivery for the morning you plan to install and water each section as you finish it.
Do I need topsoil and starter fertilizer under new sod?
Sod roots fastest into loosened, graded soil. A roughly 1 inch layer of screened topsoil helps leveling on poor ground, and a starter fertilizer applied per its label supports rooting — many regions recommend a soil test first.
