Backsplash Tile Calculator
Estimate tile boxes, setting materials, edge trim, waste, and optional cost for a measured backsplash run.
What this calculator includes
This backsplash-specific takeoff converts the measured countertop run and finished backsplash height into net tile area, individual tile faces, whole boxes, thinset, grout, and exposed-edge trim. Openings, installed package coverage, waste, and prices remain visible and editable so the result stays distinct from a general floor or wall tile estimate.
Next step in your project
Confirm the setting-material order
Match the backsplash tile size, trowel notch, substrate condition, exact bag coverage, waste, and price.

- 01
Measure the finished run
Add the horizontal backsplash runs that use the same tile and height, then enter the finished tile height above the countertop.
- 02
Subtract real openings
Enter the combined area of windows or other sections that will not receive tile; do not deduct small outlets unless the tile layout warrants it.
- 03
Match the package
Use the tile face size and the installed square-foot coverage printed for the exact box, mortar, grout, and trim stock.
- 04
Review cuts and exposed edges
Adjust waste for pattern and cuts, then measure every exposed edge that needs a finished trim piece or bullnose.
Worked example
Example: 18-foot kitchen run with an 18-inch backsplash
An 18 ft run at 18 in high has 27 sq ft of gross area. Subtracting 2 sq ft of openings and adding 10% waste produces 27.5 sq ft to order. At 10 sq ft per box, that rounds to 3 boxes before checking dye lot and breakage.
Practical buying and overage guidance
Confirm installed—not nominal—coverage for tile, mortar, and grout. Buy matching dye lots where applicable, inspect boxes before installation, and keep a small labeled reserve for future repairs without assuming every pattern can reuse offcuts.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate backsplash square footage?
Multiply the total horizontal run in feet by the backsplash height in feet, then subtract openings. This calculator performs that conversion from feet and inches.
Should outlets be subtracted from backsplash tile area?
Small electrical boxes usually create cuts rather than meaningful material savings. Deduct only larger openings that will not receive tile, and keep enough waste for cut pieces.
Why are box and mortar coverages editable?
Package coverage varies by tile, trowel, substrate, joint, and product. Installed coverage from the exact label or data sheet should replace the planning defaults.
How much backsplash tile waste should I add?
Simple straight layouts may use less waste than diagonals, mosaics, patterns, many outlets, or short returns. Ten percent is a starting assumption, not a universal requirement.
Does this calculator design the tile assembly?
No. It estimates purchase quantities only; substrate preparation, waterproofing, movement joints, electrical clearances, and product compatibility require separate review.
