Driveway project workflow
Plan a Gravel or Asphalt Driveway
Carry one measured footprint through excavation, aggregate base, the selected gravel or asphalt surface, delivery loads, and project pricing. The two surface calculators are alternatives; use the one that matches the approved section instead of adding both surface quantities.
Before you calculate
- Locate utilities and confirm property lines, access, drainage, permit, and apron requirements.
- Measure each driveway section and record slopes, soft areas, transitions, and finished elevations.
- Have the required pavement section, compaction, drainage, and subgrade treatment verified for the site and traffic.

Measure the full paving footprint
Add rectangles, triangles, circles, and other sections, then deduct islands or areas that will not be paved.
Checkpoint: Break curves and tapers into field-checkable shapes; the diagram is a proportional shape check, not a site plan.Open Square Footage Calculator → - 2
Plan cut, unsuitable soil, base import, and hauling
Convert the approved depth and footprint into bank volume, loose volume, estimated tons, and legal truck loads.
Checkpoint: Keep stripped soil, unsuitable material, and each specified aggregate layer in separate estimates.Open Excavation & Fill Calculator → - 3
Choose this path for a gravel surface
Estimate compacted volume, loose delivery tons, truck loads, and cost using the selected aggregate and compaction factor.
Checkpoint: Confirm gradation, lift thickness, moisture, compaction, edge restraint, and supplier density before ordering.Open Gravel Calculator → - 4
Choose this path for an asphalt surface
Estimate asphalt tons, base aggregate, truck loads, and material cost from area, compacted lift thickness, and plant density.
Checkpoint: Use the mix design and compacted lift limits from the plant, project specification, and paving contractor.Open Asphalt Calculator → - 5
Price mobilization, equipment, crew, and risk
Combine the chosen material path with grading, compaction, trucking, paving, overhead, contingency, and margin.
Checkpoint: Use current supplier and hauler quotes and state which hidden subgrade conditions require a change order.Open Contractor Job Pricing Calculator →
